PLOT SUMMARY
The story is about an elderly zookeeper named Amos McGee. Everyday Amos follows the same routine as he cares for the animals at the zoo but one day Amos wakes up with a cold and has to stay home from work. Wondering where Amos could be, the animals take a bus ride Amos’s house to check on him. While at his house the animals take good care of Amos just as he always does for him.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS
“A Sick Day for Amos McGee” is a lighthearted story about friendship and what friends are willing to do for those they care about. I think that children of all ages would enjoy this story and the thought of having zoo animals come to their house when they are sick to take care of them. The illustrations for the book are amazing. Erin Stead’s woodblock printing skills shows very detailed characters. Amos is probably the most detailed character of all within the story, and he almost seems to come to life on the pages of the book.
